The History of Cooper Kenworth

Cooper Kenworth, Inc., a medium and heavy duty truck dealership, leasing, service, and parts center was founded in 1973 by Cooper and Joan Sykes in Durham, North Carolina.

The company began operating out of a trailer and small shop overlooking I-85 at the Red Mill Road Exit. Cooper Kenworth, Inc. has grown significantly over the past 32 years and now has over 250 employees in eleven locations including the original Durham site, Raleigh, Clinton, Charlotte (two locations), Hickory, Wilmington, Greensboro, Rocky Mount, Tarboro and Memphis, TN.

The company completely lost its Durham facility to a major fire in November 1995. Thankfully, no one was hurt and through hard work, perseverance and unfailing employee support, the facility was completely rebuilt and reopened in August 1996.

It now serves as a state-of-the-art heavy duty truck dealership, service, and parts center setting the industry standard in eastern North Carolina.
